How to install fence panel strips — step by step guide

Installing fence panel strips is easier than you think. In this guide, we'll walk you through the entire process — from preparing materials to the final finish. Installing one panel span takes about 30 minutes and requires no specialist tools.

What you'll need

  • Fence strip set — vertical strips, horizontal strips, mounting pegs, and covering strip (everything included in our complete sets).
  • Ladder or step stool — to comfortably reach the top edge of the panel.
  • Scissors or knife — only for unpacking the set.

Tip: Before purchasing, measure your panel height (123, 153, or 173 cm) and mesh opening width (narrow 4.4–6.2 cm or wide 6.2–8 cm). This will help you choose the right set.

Step 1: Unpack and check contents

Unpack the set and lay out the components. A standard set contains:

  • 39 vertical strips (wide) or 50 strips (narrow)
  • 2 or 3 horizontal blocking strips (depending on panel height)
  • Mounting pegs
  • Top covering strip (2 sections of 1.25 m each)

Step 2: Slide in vertical strips

Start from the top edge of the panel. Slide the vertical strips one by one into the panel mesh openings, from one end of the span to the other. Gently stretch each strip with your fingers to fit the mesh opening width.

Tip: Work from one end of the span to the other. Don't insert strips from different sides at the same time — it's easier to maintain even spacing.

Step 3: Install horizontal blocking strips

After inserting all vertical strips, install the horizontal blocking strips. Each strip consists of two 1.25 m sections that connect together.

  • 123 cm panel — install 2 horizontal strips.
  • 153 or 173 cm panel — install 3 horizontal strips.

Weave the horizontal strips alternately over and under the vertical strips to lock them effectively in place.

Step 4: Secure with mounting pegs

Press the mounting pegs into the bottom of each vertical strip. The pegs prevent the strips from sliding down and falling out of the panel. This is a quick step — just press the peg in with your fingers.

Step 5: Top covering strip

Finally, install the covering strip on the top edge of the panel. It consists of two 1.25 m sections that slide over the top ends of the vertical strips. The covering strip gives the fence a clean, finished appearance.

Common installation mistakes

  • Wrong dimensions — make sure you measure panel height and mesh width before purchasing.
  • Skipping horizontal strips — without them, vertical strips may shift on windy days.
  • No mounting pegs — pegs secure the strips from sliding down, don't skip this step.

Summary

Installing fence panel strips is a simple process you can do yourself in about half an hour. The key is choosing the right set (dimensions!) and following the correct order: vertical strips → horizontal strips → mounting pegs → covering strip. The result? Full privacy, great appearance, and wind protection — all without any tools.
